As I write this, I'm anger-breathing out of my mouth because I've been congested for three days and no longer have access to my nostrils. And if you spend any amount of time with kids, you know this to be true. Little kids get sick an insane amount of times a year. It only makes sense that eventually, despite my best efforts, I too shall fall sick. Sometimes it's a flu that leaves me paralyzed in bed for two days while barfing my brains out with poor Theo brings me barf bag after barf bag, but usually I'm just sniffly and coughy and a little bit gross. It's par for the course.
I find that if I take certain steps to prevent and/or cut down my sick time, I'm back to my old self in just a couple days. I've been at this for a long time, so here are just a couple of my tricks. I do these if I think I'm about to get sick, or if I'm already sick but want to shorten my downtime and keep symptoms to a minimum.
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, obviously. I know I probably take more vitamins than I should, but you know what? It works and I don't care. If you do this and then your eyeballs fall out I cannot be held liable.
Take 2-3 Emergen-C a day. Yes I know the box says to just take one a day. Do you want to get better or not? Do it.
Eat a clementine or orange a day. It's refreshing and adds more vitamins in your sad body.
Drink hot chamomile tea with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, a small chunk of ginger, honey and lemon every night.
Green juice. Go to your local fresh pressed juicers and ask them for their version of a cold or flu busting drink. usually they are disgusting and nearly undrinkable, but my god they clear you right the fuck out. Theo made me drink a monstrosity last night that nearly had me in tears, but I felt immediately better.
Get a full nights sleep. 8 hours at least. NyQuil yourself if you have to. I try to avoid it because it makes it hard to get up in the mornings, but I kept waking myself up with my cough and I was exhausted on top of having a cold, so can imagine how awesome my mood has been.
Take vitamins! A multi-vitamin and a vitamin C! Always on a full stomach, of course!
Stay super hydrated, keep a re-usable bottle near you at all times. Your body (and skin!) will thank you for it.
Chicken soup! Go classic or give it a little twist. I'll be making this one tonight!
Nap when the kids nap!
I'd love to hear any tips and tricks that you have up your sleeve to keep you healthy or help you feel better if you (and your kids) are sick!
