There are currently over 10 bug bites on my damn body. I don't know what it is about the East Coast, but these past few summers have been murderous. Not only am I constantly getting bitten by mosquitos, but I have an insane reaction to them and each bite swells up to the size of a baseball. The worst was last July when a bite on my calf became so swollen and excruciatingly painful that I had to lay on the ground at the airport in Denver, weeping while icing my leg, as Theo ran to duty-free gift shop looking for Benadryl and Hydrocortisone cream. It was seriously terrible. And my leg looked deformed for days afterwards and I had to wear flats to a wedding the next day because my leg hurt too much for heels. Unacceptable.
This never used to happen to me in California, but I remember as a kid going to our summer home in Mexico and getting these ridiculously huge bug bites that I would claw at until I bled. No amount of citronella candles could hold back the seas of mosquitos that were thirsting for my blood. I don't recall my mom ever putting bug spray on me, but you better believe that I will be ALL OVER THIS SHIT when I have kids. Clearly I have delicious blood and I will most likely pass it on to my future spawn. So with that in mind, here are some kid-safe bug sprays that I've tried on myself (because I've tried every bug spray on the market) and can attest to their success.
I also recommend keeping a healthy stock of Citronella Candles around, they do seem to make a difference somewhat, and I'll take what I can get. The smell is reminiscent of summertime, too.
And if using those bug sprays skeeves you out, you can also DIY some bug spray yourself! Here's what you will need:
2 tablespoons of witch hazel
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1/2 teaspoon of vodka
about 100 drops of bug-repelling essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, lemon, tea tree and citronella.
Mix it up in a spray bottle and go to town on your little ones.
Do you get eaten alive every summer? Have you ever tried one of these bands? I'm thinking of getting one. I'm really suffering here, you guys.
